FLOAT / call-for-art
Deadline - 11:59pm on March 9, 2017
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to create artwork that stay afloat in either water or air. VAE is challenging artists to think off the wall, and in the pool. Create work that rests in fluid transitions. Work that requires the viewers’ transitions. Work that floats on the surface, between substances, and in space.
SCOPE '17 / call-for-art
Deadline - 11:59pm on May 8, 2017
SCOPE is a survey of the southern landscape. While being bold, beautiful, provocative, and enticing the landscape is also set in histories, cultures, and people. These histories, cultures, and people affect and are affected by the political and societal landscapes, that make the South as we see it and talk about it today.
This annual juried exhibition asks artists to create and showcase discussions on the South's natural, political, and social landscapes.

This is an open non-juried exhibition where we will plaster the gallery with art determined through current events and news, including but not limited to the factual.
Serving Life: ReVisioning Justice
Serving Life: ReVisioning Justice
January 5 - 25
Hidden Voices is a radically inclusive, participatory, and co-creative collective committed to creating just, compassionate, and sustainable relationships. This network of relationships connects communities across difference and provides pathways for global change.
Serving Life Exhibit connects the audience to the humanity of those who are incarcerated. How do people end up on death row? Following the lives of 15 men on death row, their personal narratives shed light on compounded layers of systemic oppression. Their path through life highlights the impact of generational trauma and the social and systemic forces that result in a lifetime in prison, or death row. The exhibit creates pathways for empathy and compassionate action.
Hidden Voices and VAE are working together to find local artists to be paired with each incarcerated participant. Artists will create a piece of art that evokes the compassion of Hidden Voices and the accounts of the incarcerated individuals.
DETAILS
● 12-15 local artists will be selected
● The final art piece must be completed by end of July 2017
● The pieces will tour with the Serving Life exhibit for 3-5 years
● Artists will be compensated with a stipend of $500 and up to $500 in materials.
● Artists will not have the ability to meet the participant in person, but will be able to communicate and collaborate through writing letters.

Contemporary South 2018 / call-for-art
February 2 - March 24, 2018
Deadline - 11:59pm on January 1, 2018
The South is a hub for creativity. Raleigh is doing its part to lead this charge: The City of Raleigh has adopted the Raleigh Arts Plan, a ten-year master plan to strengthen arts and culture for all.
To do our part, VAE showcases some of the most ambitious and timely works by artists from across the region in our annual exhibition, Contemporary South. The purpose of the exhibition is to gather a survey of what artists in the Regional South are currently creating. Since 2012 this exhibition has grown and expanded to become one of VAE's most popular exhibitions.
We invite you to help us make COSO'18 the best iteration yet!

I express my artistic vision through abstract mixed-media landscapes. I am intrigued and inspired by the natural environment. My intent is to provide the viewer with a sense of the symbiotic relationship between the primeval elements - stone, soil, water and sky - and the lifeforms these elements nurture.
