April 7 - 27, 2017
Deadline - 11:59pm on March 9, 2017
The FLOAT exhibition is dedicated to Sarah Powers, because.
There is a childish freedom of sitting in 4 inches of water. Kiddie pools have a nostalgia of aloof parents and excited friends eager to sit in rusty hose water. The imprint of those memories have toys and objects, designed to (or not designed to) float in luke-warm water waiting to be rescued.
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to create artwork that stay afloat in either water or air. VAE is challenging artists to think off the wall, and in the pool. Create work that rests in fluid transitions. Work that requires the viewers’ transitions. Work that floats on the surface, between substances, and in space.
We float you this to be creative.
DETAILS
FLOAT is an open call juried exhibition, where art stays afloat, hopefully. All works must float in either their own designed apparatus, pool's of water supplied by VAE, or in the gallery's airspace. All work must not degrade by water. All work must fit through the VAE’s 104″ x 71″ front door. Up to two entries per artist. Juried with JPEGs. No media restrictions. Entries must received by 11:59pm on March 9, 2017.
JUROR - Mary Mattingly
Mary Mattingly is an artist based in New York. Her work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Kitchen, International Center of Photography, the Seoul Art Center, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and the Palais de Tokyo. She recently transformed a military trailer into a social space at MoMA’s Cullman Center and launched Swale, a floating food forest in New York. Mattingly teaches at Pratt Institute and Yale University.
