TO PARTICIPATE:
STEP ONE: simply answer four simple questions. That’s it. Don’t over think it. There’s no application fees, no budgets, and no one cares how amazing you are at writing. Just tell us your idea by midnight on OCTOBER 13.*
STEP TWO: we will pick the most interesting ideas and invite those folks to come pitch them live to our Awesome Trustees as part of a fun, supportive public event.

AWESOME GUIDELINES
The simplest and most spur-of-the-moment ideas can start a movement and build community! We think those ideas are important and we want to hear them! Awesome Raleigh Durham funds creative ideas that are specific, public, and spark thought in a meaningful way for the Triangle community. In other words, applications that match the following criteria have the best chance of being funded:
> The project is joyful, audacious, exciting, thought-provoking, and/or spontaneous
> The final project takes place within the Triangle area of North Carolina
> The final project available for the public to enjoy
> The project has a timeline that begins within one year of funding being awarded
> The project scale can be achieved with the $1,000 grant vs. the $1,000 going toward a much larger funding need
*We do not claim ownership or future rights to your project, nor do we wish the funds to be repaid if things do not go as planned. We just want to see how awesome you can be with your idea and some support!

VAE is home to the RDU Chapter of the Awesome Foundation, an international organization that empowers (and pays!) creative thinkers to dream up ideas that make their communities that much more, well, awesome! VAE awards $1000 every single month to folks who care about community and think outside the box!

The next critique is with guest critic, Chris Charles of Chris Charles Photography on Tuesday October 18th from 7-8:30pm at VAE Raleigh. Space is limited!
Photographer and experienced multi-disciplinary creative Chris Charles always had the desire to make things. From childhood comic book illustrations, to using his parent's 35mm camera to discover and explore his passion for photography as a child, to having his paintings displayed at the Brooklyn Museum of Art as a 2nd grader (true story), Chris always had a knack for making the most out of very little. Now residing in North Carolina, Chris currently enjoys crafting visuals for his many local and national clients.
- This critique session is for photographers.
- Each artist may bring one piece - completed or in progress - to be critiqued.
- The registration is $5, which will go to our guest critic for their time and knowledge.

Harriet Hoover is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is concerned with connecting the past and present with the personal and social through sculpture, performance, and curatorial endeavors.
Harriet is the recipient of the 2016 – 2017 North Carolina Arts Council Artist Fellowship Award. She studied Art + Design + Textile Technology at NCSU and received an MFA in Sculpture from UNC Greensboro. Harriet is the Coordinator of Studio, Teen and College Programs at the NCMA. She lives and works in Chapel Hill, NC.

MONDAY, JANUARY 15TH @ VAE RALEIGH
SPEED DATES are thematized 30-minute one-on-ones with area smartypants who can answer your pressing professional questions! This time, we are excited to host four shop owners and store experts from around the Triangle to answer your questions about getting your work into a store! Register while space is available!
HOW IT WORKS
This is your chance to pick some smart brains in a relaxed, comfortable environment! You should come with a few questions you want to ask your guru(s) during your 30-minute meeting(s). The Speed Date registration form will give them a little background on you before you meet so you won't have to start your conversation totally from scratch.
This event will be held from 2-6 pm on Monday, January 15. That time frame is just when the gurus are available to meet. You get to pick who you meet with and when (depending on availability). Pick and choose your TWO dates to suit your needs and schedule!
REGISTRATION
STEP ONE: Complete the registration form through Wufoo [CLICK HERE]. You will be asked for your contact information and a short survey of questions to help the gurus understand your needs. This event is FREE for current VAE members and $10 for non-members.

Alice Southwick
Ackland Museum Store, Chapel-Hill
Alice has been the Manager of the Ackland Art Museum since its opening in 2011. She has even owned a few shops herself, including a bakery and a Japanese Paper boutique. She holds degrees in Fine Art and Interior Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and has over 20 years of Commercial Interior Design experience serving the Cambridge, MA and San Francisco, CA area.
Pam Blondin
DECO, Raleigh
Pam opened Deco Raleigh after serving almost 30 years as a non-profit executive. The store began as a mission focused on creating connections and supporting the community. Today, the store features almost 200 unique brands and, since 2012, has sold goods produced by more than 100 local makers and artisans. Deco has donated more than $40,000 in cash and goods to local charities and arts organizations.
Krista Anne, The Mothership, Durham
Krista Anne was born and raised on a farm in North Carolina. In 2012, she founded The Makery, an online shop and showcase for North Carolina makers. In 2014, the store found a brick and mortar home. The Makery won The Smoffice Competition, two Indy Awards, and was featured on FastCoDesign and Southern Living online. In 2017 the shop merged with their neighbors to become The Mothership, a shop, coworking, and event space. Krista is also a programmer and works with startups, and is primarily interested in bringing femme values and heart into business and technology.

Oami Powers is a designer and artist raised in California & New Zealand who now calls Raleigh, NC home. Her clothing designs have been sold in boutiques across the country and been featured in InStyle, Southern Living, the News & Observer and the IndyWeek. She now creates art in a variety of media and works with the design innovators and creative troublemakers over at Designbox.

Comedy Night: #BlackOnBlackV2 edition!
On Saturday November 4, 8-9:30pm, VAE will host four hilarious African American comedians in conjunction with the current exhibition, Black On Black V2.
On Saturday November 4, 8-9:30pm, VAE will host six hilarious comedians of color in conjunction with the current exhibition, Black On Black V2, curated by Mike Williams and Linda Dallas.
The goal is to showcase talented comedy performers while creating deeper experiences of our exhibitions, encouraging new community connections, and giving you a chance to laugh your head off for 90 minutes. Who doesn't need a good laugh nowadays?!
For this show, comedy guru and host Adam Cohen is bringing in a crew to tickle your funny bones.
Doors open at 7 - so you can have time to check out Black On Black V2.

Mike Mello, headliner
Virginia-born and North Carolina-raised, Mike Mello is one of the most respected comedians in the region. He has toured with Tracey Morgan and Russell Peters; has opened for Dave Chapelle, D.L. Hughley, Nikki Glaser and Gary Gulman, among many others; and appears regularly at the Laugh Your Asheville Off Comedy Festival. Not only has his standup raised the standard of comedy in Raleigh for almost 15 years, he's also mentored many of the area's most talented young comedians.
Matt White
Matt's comedy ambitions were hatched at East Carolina University, where he created the Seriously Clowning comedy company, which established the now-thriving Greenville, NC comedy scene. His "if you build it, the comedy will come" mentality and strong work ethic has propelled his career, which has included winning the Carolina's Funniest Comic contest in 2013 and Port City's (Wilmington) Top Comic in 2012. He has opened for Tig Notaro, Alonzo Bodden, Tim Meadows, Rory Scovel and Sean Patton, among others.
JD Etheridge
Based in Greensboro, JD has quickly established himself on the North Carolina comedy scene. He has been a finalist multiple times in the NC's Funniest Person Contest and the Ultimate Comedy Challenge, and has opened for Tom Segura and Rodney Perry, among others. He's also the co-host of The Open Micers podcast, and is a big fan of grilled cheese sandwiches and video games.
Dejahzh Hedrick
Dejahzh lives in Winston-Salem, but was born in the mountains of Tibet sometime around the 8th century A.D. as an immaculate conception. He was recently a finalist in the NC's Funniest Person contest.
Micah Hanner
Micah hails from Winston-Salem, and performs regularly around North Carolina. He co-hosts The Open Micers podcast, and has been a finalist in the NC's Funniest Person Contest and the Ultimate Comedy Challenge.
Brandy Brown
Brandy is a multi-talented performer who was born in Dayton, Ohio and raised in Raleigh. In addition to standup comedy, she's also an accomplished actress, producer and writer, appearing on both sides of the camera for several independent films and sketch series.

Ignite Speed Date for NC Arts Council's Artist Fellowship!
On Monday, October 23, VAE will host a special Ignite Speed Dating event for visual, craft, and film/video artists and choreographers applying for a 2017 fellowship. Two staff members from the NC Arts Council and two recent fellowship recipients will be here to meet with you one-on-one and give specific tips to improve your application.

IGNITE SPEED DATES are thematized 30-minute one-on-ones with area smartypants so you can get your most pressing questions answered.
This special Speed Date edition is designed to give you feedback on your North Carolina Arts Council's Artist Fellowship applications.
This fellowship gives ambitious, committed artists $10,000 to further their creative careers. It is one of the biggest awards available to artists in this state, and VAE wants to help you put together your best possible application!
Choreographers and visual, craft, and film/video artists are welcomed to apply. Application Deadline: November 1, 2017.
This round of Speed Dates gives you the chance to take the most-finalized rough draft from 90% to 100%!

Anjanée Bell, Dance and Outreach Director, North Carolina Arts Council
Anjanée is an artist, dancer, choreographer, educator and visionary, who's ready to put you in the running for the Artist Fellowship! She has experience in arts management, the non-profit arts sector in North Carolina, artist-facing expertise, and arts presenting, so she can help you explain and highlight your scope of practice - because she gets it! She specializes in choreography, but has smarts and experience across the board!
Heather Gordon, Durham based Visual Artist, 2014-15 NCAC Fellowship Recipient
Heather maps the poetry of people’s lives using numbers and geometry. Her work has extended to include site-specific installations and performance-based collaborations. Her work has been featured in CAM Raleigh, SECCA, Ackland Art Museum, 21C Durham and Waterworks, and has traveled to San Francisco, Huston, and to ArtPrize7. In addition to receiving the NCAC Fellowship, Gordon won Durham's ArtPrize7 PITCH NIGHT and was the Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Grant recipient.
Stacey Kirby, Durham based Visual Artist,, 2014-15 NCAC Fellowship Recipient
Stacey's 'performative interactions' and collaborative projects combine installation and performance in alternative, private and public spaces. Fueled by the current political climate and issues of citizenship, Kirby invites visitors to become active participants in her work to empower the voice within all of us. Kirby is a recipient of the ArtPrize Eight Juried Grand Prize (2016), the NC Arts Council Artist Fellowship for Visual Artists (2014-15), an ArtPrize Pitch Night Grant (2016) for North Carolina and an Indies Arts Award from the Independent Weekly (Durham, NC) for her participation in the BAIN Project (2009). She is nominee for the Anonymous Was A Woman Award (2017) a finalist for the 1858 Prize by the Gibbes Museum of Art (Charleston, SC) for contemporary southern art. Kirby has also been awarded artist residencies throughout the U.S.
Jeff Pettus, Senior Program Director, Artists & Communities at the North Carolina Arts Council
Jeff oversees most of the grants programs and services to artists and arts organizations at the NC Arts Council. He's seen his fair share of amazing grant and fellowship applications in his 20+ years at the NCAC. If there's anyone to show you what not to do, he's the one! Plus, this Princeton grad has worked in book publishing and art museum administration, so he has a few tricks up his sleeve!

Thomas Sayre is a Raleigh based sculptor and painter. He designs and builds public art projects and private commissions all over the world.
Raleigh residents are most likely to recognize Sayre's Gyre (pictured above) at the NCMA and the Shimmer Wall located on the Raleigh Convention Center.
In 1995, Sayre received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. In 2014, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of fine arts from North Carolina State University.
Sayre is also a founding principal of the multi-disciplinary design firm Clearscapes, alongside architect Steve Schuster. The team designs numerous civic, educational, museum buildings, and is the force behind Raleigh's Union Station.
Comedy Night: MEZCLA edition!
On Saturday August 12, 8-9:30pm, VAE will host four hilarious Latinx comedians in conjunction with our MEZCLA exhibition, curated by Claudia Corletto. This is the first of three Comedy Nights happening this year. The goal is to showcase talented comedy performers while creating deeper experiences of our exhibitions, encouraging new community connections, and giving you a chance to laugh your head off for 90 minutes. Who doesn't need a good laugh nowadays?!
For August, comedy guru and host Adam Cohen is bringing Rene Luna, Freddy Valoy, Kenyon Adamcik, and Carlos Valencia to tickle your funny bones. That's a whole lot of silly under one roof-- don't miss it! Doors open at 7 so you can check out our amazing MEZCLA exhibition. Show starts at 8!

Shelley Smith Anchorlight, Raleigh
Anchorlight is an interdisciplinary creative space, founded with the intent of fostering artists and small businesses at varying stages of their development. The space provides exhibition, performance and production space in addition to artist studios and residency opportunities.
Shelley Smith is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Raleigh, NC, and a Master of Art + Design candidate at the NCSU College of Design.
Laura Ritchie The Carrack, Durham
The Carrack is an artist-centered, volunteer-run, zero-commission exhibition and event space in downtown Durham. The mission of the organization is to empower local artists to forge productive cultural and social-economic ties with their community through professional exhibit and performance opportunities.
Laura Ritchie is the co-founder and director of The Carrack. She is passionate about creating opportunities across the arts and is working with her community to build safe, inclusive space for underrepresented and emerging artists. Currently, she is in pursuing a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at Duke University.
Stacy Bloom-Rexrode, The Block Gallery, Raleigh
The Block Gallery connects local artists to community through ongoing exhibitions and public outreach. Located on the first and second floors of the Raleigh Municipal Building, five to six exhibitions are displayed each year and feature works by artists who live or work in Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Orange or Wake County. Exhibitions are scheduled through a call for artists, juried by a selection panel of visual arts professionals, Raleigh Arts Commissioners and City staff.
Stacy Bloom-Rexrode is the Curator of Exhibitions and Collections with the Office of Raleigh Arts. She also holds a MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Studio Art-Painting and Sculpture.
Kelly McChesney, LUMP, Raleigh
Lump has served the community by providing a space for the presentation of thought-provoking art, while acting as a pipeline between NC and the world of contemporary art.
Kelly McChesney, re-directed her efforts as director of Flanders Gallery to serve as the Director of Lump as it transitioned into a non-profit entity. McChesney is known for eyeing emerging contemporary artists and for supporting up-and-coming artists.

Join us for the weirdest prom you've ever been to (probably)! VAE's first ever prom night fundraiser will be a visual smorgasbord of all things prom, with dancing, awkward portraits, custom boutonnieres + corsages made on-site by artists, punch (spiked, naturally), snacks, a prom king + queen competition, tacky glitz, and of course your amazing outfits!

SPEED DATES are thematized 30-minute one-on-ones with area smartypants who can answer your pressing professional questions! This time, we are excited to host four marketing experts from Centerline Digital to answer your questions about how to get the word out about your creative projects. Learn how to stand out from the crowd! Register now while space is available!
HOW IT WORKS
This is your chance to pick some smart brains in a relaxed, comfortable environment! You should come with a few questions you want to ask your guru(s) during your 30-minute meeting(s). The Speed Date registration form will give them a little background on you before you meet so you won't have to start your conversation totally from scratch.
This event will be held from 2-6 pm on Monday, May 15. That time frame is just when the gurus are available to meet. You get to pick who you meet with and when (depending on availability). You are not expected to be at the event the whole four hours it's happening. Pick and choose to suit your needs and schedule!
REGISTRATION
STEP ONE: Complete the registration form through Wufoo [CLICK HERE]. You will be asked for your contact information and a short survey of questions to help the gurus understand your needs. This event is FREE for current VAE members and $10 for non-members.

- What are the main challenges with marketing your creative work?
STEP TWO: Once you've completed step one we'll give you a link to an outside scheduling service called Sign Up Genius where you will choose the guru(s) and time(s) you want. Once you've done that and hit submit, you're 100% registered!

IGNITE CREATIVITY SUMMIT

The Ignite Creativity Summit is designed to empower creative people of all persuasions by inspiring them to think bigger, make connections and become familiar with the resources available to them, both locally and nationally.
Ignite is not a professional conference. It is a blow-your-mind learning experience.
Through Ignite, VAE is rethinking and retooling professional education for creative makers. Online search engines have changed the way people learn. With information just seconds away, the job of educating artists is no longer about providing data, but about teaching artists how to apply data to build stronger careers and communities. Ignite offers a new interactive learning structure to fit the times, providing creative entrepreneurs with learning experiences that can’t be googled.
The 2017 summit theme is ALLIES: How can artists use creativity to empower and engage marginalized communities, creating relationships that are reciprocally beneficial and that bring about positive social change?
This year’s programming includes:
A free public keynote address by New Orleans citizen artist Imani Jacqueline Brown, a founding cultural activist of Blights Out, an organization that serves a cultural connective tissue to join oppositional groups of people in order to heal literal and figurative blights in New Orleans.
Cool regional panelists and speakers speaking about the ways that creative symbiosis between art and community unlocked unexpected artistic and professional opportunities for them.
A facilitated charrette (which is a fancy word for group problem solving and brainstorming) around the idea of using and building alliances as artists to meet needs within the community. Ignite has $3000 to give away as seed money for projects resulting from these discussions and interactions!

Jeff Pettus
Senior Program Director of Arts in Communities, North Carolina Arts Council
Jeff oversees most of the grants programs and services to artists and arts organizations at the NC Arts Council, like the North Carolina Artist Fellowship! He studied at Princeton University and the University of North Carolina and worked in book publishing and art museum administration prior to coming to the Arts Council.
Emily Catherine Mealor
Arts in Communities Coordinator, North Carolina Arts Council
Emily Catherine manages grants related to arts in accessibility, aging, and healthcare. Emily Catherine has degrees in English and Social Work from Appalachian State University and Washington University in St. Louis, where she focused on community development and arts integration. She's also involved with SPARKcon and serves on the committee for the Arts Learning Community for Universal Access through The Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County and the Office of Raleigh Arts.
Brandi Neuwirth
Art Coordinator, United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County
Brandi curates public art spaces and administrates the Professional Development Grant for Artists at United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County. She moved to the Triangle in 2005 from Los Angeles, where she worked in entertainment for 20th Century Fox, Vanguard Films/DreamWorks and Conde Nast. The child of two artists, she is proud to be a part of the vibrant arts community in Raleigh and the Triangle.
Margaret DeMott
Director of Artist Services, Durham Arts Council
Margaret brings 34 years arts experience, overseeing Durham Arts Council's four grant programs, exhibit programs and technical assistance for arts organizations and artists. She has served on many artist selection panels, and grant review panels, managed the community process for the Durham Cultural Master Plan, coordinated a 3 year, multi-county audience development initiative and currently provides support for the Durham SmART Initiative.
Clarenda Stanley-Anderson
VP of Institutional Advancement, Shaw University
Clarenda Stanley-Anderson is a fundraising generalist who has earned the coveted Certified Fund Raising Expert (CFRE) designation. Selected as the 2016 Outstanding Fundraising Professional by the Association for Fundraising Professionals Triangle Chapter, she specializes in individual giving and major gifts, having raised more than $51M in her decade-plus career. As Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Shaw University, she spearheaded the University’s 70% increase in private philanthropy last year. Love-in: A Positivity Potluck
The radical act of conscientious kindness and community!
The term 'love-in' was coined exactly 50 years ago in 1967 and refers to a gathering of people in the spirit of compassion, community and positive change. This Friday (January 20) VAE will host its first ever love–in during gallery hours 11a-6p, followed by a public reading of The Taming at 7:30p.
Think of it as a positivity potluck. We'll screen some inspiring videos throughout the day and have materials to write and design love + thank you notes to whoever you wish. We're asking you to bring and share things you love:conversation, poetry, music, games, puppies, baked goods, dance, art/craft activities- anything that you love and want to share with another human being. Come for a minute or stay all day. All people welcome.
