Animals, landscape, people and objects are often common themes in my work. By defining forms through layering of texture and color, I search for the accidental image. These images often serve to guide the piece, and ignite inspiration from memory, experience or dreams.

First Friday Receptions: January 13 (Do-Over) & February 3, 2017 6-10pm
Brian Davis lives and works in Northern Virginia. Born in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, Mr. Davis was raised in Guam and South Carolina. He has taught New Media and Sculpture at The George Washington University and American University. Mr. Davis has a B.F.A in General Studio from Winthrop University and an M.F.A in Sculpture from the University of Florida.
From his roots of skateboarding and playing guitar for a punk band in the Deep South, he has embraced the D.I.Y. aesthetic. These social and creative endeavors, activities like organizing punk shows and collective ramp building, led to an interest in sculpture, video art, and to the current work that explores connectivity, interaction, and the possibilities of effecting change in the surrounding world.
Davis’ artistic practice is varied and experimental and includes elements of public sculpture, multimedia installation, and virtual applications. His work and research explores cross-discipline techniques and practices to exploit the medium’s connection to the viewer and the surrounding space. While focusing on viewer experience, Davis also strives to create a dialogue with the history of sculpture and video art.
Elevation V2 is a multipart installation consisting of a variety of interconnected elements. The central element is a tripod structure on which two segments if a wooden chair are propelled towards the ceiling of the gallery space. The mechanism that propels the chair segments upward is controlled by a gallery visitor who must stare intently at their own disappearing image in a computer monitor. Only while this person is actively interfacing with the monitor will the mechanism continue to operate; as soon as the connection is broken, the chair separates and is guided back to the gallery floor. While the work is active, the interfacing individual cannot view the active space behind them.

I make functional ceramics that are a reflection of my love for simple luxuries. By combining textures, colors, and clean shapes I craft wares that are a pleasure to both use and admire.
To me there is beauty in a seam left showing on the wall of a cup, or a rim that is just a hair off perfectly round and in fingerprints pertinently trapped in the glaze. These are the secrets left behind by the maker. They are the visible cues that shout out “I was not mass produced!”
For many years I strived for perfection, never quite satisfied, as I tended to view these elegant markings more as flaws. But over time, it’s the flaws that bring me back to those pieces and keeps me interested in making more. I feel that my pottery is constantly in motion. As I move on to a new idea I can’t help but find myself revisiting the older pieces and combining bits of both to create new work. It’s an exciting process that I don’t ever see becoming perfected.

In my images, I want the viewer to see contemplatively. Agnes Martin exhorted her viewers to look at her work as you would meditate on a landscape. But unlike Agnes Martin, I wish to describe a more specific narrative of human experiences.

In my images, I want the viewer to see contemplatively. Agnes Martin exhorted her viewers to look at her work as you would meditate on a landscape. But unlike Agnes Martin, I wish to describe a more specific narrative of human experiences. The ambition is to seamlessly join the spiritual with the earthbound. In working non-representationally, the spiritual is present in shape that is animated by the earthbound descriptors of color, composition, and line. The dynamics between the two are made manifest through the dichotomies such as push-pull, love-hate, good-evil, and severity and humor. This is the kind of story I want to tell. And with a ‘meditation of the landscape,’ I want the viewers to recognize varieties of common experience.

In my artwork I seek to bring unconscious and collective unconscious knowledge into consciousness. When I paint I work intuitively, opening to my personal unconscious, and global collective unconscious through a deep listening. The paintings unfold, each piece strange, unique, slowly forming, with a playful logic that unifies, and is yet authentic. Themes that emerge are often about relationship, identity, diversity, nature, reactivity, new perspectives, struggle and resolution. Some paintings are fairly literal, others more abstract – dependent on the inner world I enter. The images range from whimsical and playful, calm or meditative, to full of struggle. Each piece circles the veils between reality and the imaginary.

Questions arise which the paintings assist in bringing insight. What is this dream asking of me? How can I process this memory? How do I hold other’s stories and fears? Can I paint a glimpse of what is possible? Can I paint what I truly believe people radiate under all the distress? My intention as an artist is to invite the viewer to be curious, to move into a space of their own imagination, speculating about their impressions and what the artwork inspires in them.
Some of the work arises as I concentrate on bringing a quality of attention on some impressive but unintelligible dream image, such as the innocence before a woman opens a door to a room full of imaginary animal spirits. Some of the work emerges during a C.G. Jung inspired Authentic Movement sessions, no longer in image or dream but now in my body, allowing the movement to happen as my psyche and body draw or paint between movement experiences. Inner parts speak, move, and ask to be seen in visual form. The work can be fantastical, verging on the surreal, where creatures interact with sorcerers and angels in imaginary environments. Some of the work arises during Active Imagination as inner figures ask to come into consciousness and be known. A recurrent visitor is the dragon as protector, as creative muse, as flying witness. Some of the mixed-media artwork emerges from the materials, watching the watercolors flow into each other, opening access to the imagination. Some of the work develops during a Body-Mind Centering exploration of my inner body systems. For example, feeling into my lymphatic system where I plant a garden of white blood cells to strengthen the immune system or visualizing full-body, fluid-filled internal organs, as a bird woman appears with human internal organs. I might enter into the spaciousness of cellular consciousness, where the cells are surrounded by space and a thin fascial web. Some of the work is created after mediation practice where a calm, peaceful presence is embodied, and then takes visual form. Some of the work arises after exploring theater or movement improvisation, where figures spin and float, circling the void.
Once down on paper I can now see the unconscious made conscious and reflect upon it. I do not always know the meaning, and each new viewing allows further interpretation. A single piece can have a weaving of references: personal and collective memory, dreams, rituals, body impressions, landscapes, present moment and future. As I work on a piece I usually begin to have a name or a story about the work. This bringing of the unconscious into consciousness keeps me engaged in the piece. Quite often references overlap leading to multiple associations. This multiple meaning making, flows through the creative process, and applies when the work hangs on the wall.

My production process often leaves me with scraps of wood that are too small to incorporate into my work, but too big to throw away. I find myself saving these scraps for potential use in the future. After much deliberation, I found myself dipping these scraps into acrylic paint and laminating them together. This process was the inspiration for Pixel-ed.

After much deliberation, I found myself dipping these scraps into acrylic paint and laminating them together. This process was the inspiration for Pixel-ed.
Pixel-ed is made out of 14 sheets of ¾” pine plywood. I spent about 20 hours on the table saw ripping the plywood into 1 ½” strips. It took 6272 cuts on the miter saw to cut the strips into varying lengths. I dipped these pieces into 33 different colors of acrylic paint and laminated these pieces into 63 total units.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am inspired by personal narrative from my childhood, adolescent and adult relationships. Since childhood, I have embraced materials considered part of the arts and crafts world. It is a way for me to combine my childhood experiences of crafting with my Grandmother and spending time with my carpenter Father while he worked. The materials they used in combination reveal the tensions between low art and high art. Through their use with form, I am leveling the playing field.
The relationship between hard and soft plays an important role in my work. This is demonstrated through the materiality of fiber and wood. My material choices and processes reference my experiences with lost relationships. I pay homage to my Father and Grandmother by incorporating the same materials that played a part in my childhood. Creating a delicate balance.

THE EXHIBITION
Walking to the subway after a quick and violent early spring thunderstorm, I began to notice among the usual, post-deluge, debris a multitude of discarded umbrellas piled around garbage bins and left near the station entrance. Maybe it’s always this way after a storm but my attention focused in on what seemed an inordinate amount of the things. The scene made an impression on me and with it my scavenger impulse had me gathering up all the cast off umbrellas I could carry. Later I found most were damaged in some way by the strong winds that had accompanied the downpour. Riding in a crowded train I awkwardly juggled the armful of umbrellas. My soggy treasure presented me conspicuously and earned me looks from the other commuters.
That experience informed the creation of Architecture for the Inclement. I fantasized a structure made through the resourcefulness of one seeking basic protection from the elements. Rummaging the streets to create an eccentric, visionary nest. Several early attempts to create the form by sewing or lashing the umbrellas together proved to be weak or too impractical. Eventually my research for creating portable structures led me to plans for a geodesic dome structure. This construction technique was popularized by American theorist and designer Buckminster Fuller. Early explorations for using the geodesic design came to him during his time teaching at Black Mountain College. He later served as President of Synergetics Inc., a dome building construction firm based in Raleigh. Fuller was interested in designs that could benefit humanity. The geodesic dome was one solution for achieving a lightweight, strong, and affordable shelter. For my humble and pragmatic purposes the triangular grid-work allowed a flexible way to configure and attach umbrellas. The form is also easy to dismantle and store. The marriage of the umbrella, which is basically a handheld, pop-up shelter, with Fuller’s visionary geodesic structure made sense for the sculptures design but also feeds its meaning and interpretation.
THE ARTIST
Evan Reed was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and has lived throughout the United States. Currently he resides in Falls Church, Virginia and teaches sculpture and three-dimensional design at Georgetown University in Washington. D.C. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. His work is in several private collections and he has received grants to assist his studio work through Georgetown University, The Franz and Virginia Bader Foundation and the Fairfax County Commission for the Arts. His artwork focuses on creating objects that utilize the familiar but aim to transport the viewer beyond mundane experiences and encounters. He develops forms by collecting and exploring the properties of material, many of which are discarded items, sourced from his community. The works pull from a variety of visual references including architectural forms, modes of transportation, and tools. His work is concerned with themes of Spirituality, History, Place, and Humor.

VAE’s annual holiday exhibition is one of the best ways to make your work available for purchase this holiday season!
