Photographer and experienced multi-disciplinary creative Chris Charles always had the desire to make things. From childhood comic book illustrations, to using his parent's 35mm camera to discover and explore his passion for photography as a child, to having his paintings displayed at the Brooklyn Museum of Art as a 2nd grader (true story), Chris always had a knack for making the most out of very little. Now residing in North Carolina, Chris currently enjoys crafting visuals for his many local and national clients.
- This critique session is for photographers.
- Each artist may bring one piece - completed or in progress - to be critiqued.
- The registration is $5, which will go to our guest critic for their time and knowledge.
- Critique space is limited to 12 participants.
- Observation is open + free. Floor time + feedback is reserved for paying participants, wishing to bring 1 piece to be critiqued.

The next critique is with guest critic, Harriet Hoover on Tuesday May 29th from 7-8:30pm at VAE Raleigh.
Harriet Hoover is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is concerned with connecting the past and present with the personal and social through sculpture, performance, and curatorial endeavors.
Harriet is the recipient of the 2016 – 2017 North Carolina Arts Council Artist Fellowship Award. She studied Art + Design + Textile Technology at NCSU and received an MFA in Sculpture from UNC Greensboro. Harriet is the Coordinator of Studio, Teen and College Programs at the NCMA. She lives and works in Chapel Hill, NC.

The next critique is with guest critic, Oami Powers on Tuesday February 20th from 7-8:30pm at VAE Raleigh.
Oami Powers is a designer and artist raised in California & New Zealand who now calls Raleigh, NC home. Her clothing designs have been sold in boutiques across the country and been featured in InStyle, Southern Living, the News & Observer and the IndyWeek. She now creates art in a variety of media and works with the design innovators and creative troublemakers over at Designbox.

The next critique is with guest critic, Thomas Sayre on Thursday, November 16th, from 7- 8:30pm, at VAE.

Thomas Sayre is a Raleigh based sculptor and painter. He designs and builds public art projects and private commissions all over the world.
Raleigh residents are most likely to recognize Sayre's Gyre (pictured above) at the NCMA and the Shimmer Wall located on the Raleigh Convention Center.
In 1995, Sayre received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. In 2014, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of fine arts from North Carolina State University.
Sayre is also a founding principal of the multi-disciplinary design firm Clearscapes, alongside architect Steve Schuster. The team designs numerous civic, educational, museum buildings, and is the force behind Raleigh's Union Station.
Artist Critique
VAE invites area educators and art professionals to do short individual critiques of your work. The next critique is scheduled for Monday, July 24th from 7pm - 8:30pm, at VAE Raleigh! Kathleen Rieder, Associate Professor of Art +Design Art at NC State, will be our guest critic.
Kathleen Rieder has been a teaching faculty member in the Department of Art + Design at NC State since 1989. With an emphasis is in Design Studies, her courses ranging from drawing, painting, color theory, mixed media, 2D Design and 3D Design.
In addition to teaching, she actively exhibits her art. She has been selected three times to exhibit in the NC Artists Exhibition at the NC Museum of Art and has exhibited at the Hanes Art Center at UNC Chapel Hill; the Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNC-Greensboro; Meredith College; NC State College of Design; the Louise Wells Cameron Museum in Wilmington; and more recently at the Caldwell County Arts Council and the Mahler Gallery in Raleigh.
The critique session is open to any medium/style of work.
Each artist may bring one piece to be critiqued and each artist will have an equal amount of time to receive feedback.
The registration fee is $5 so that VAE can pay our guest critic for their time and knowledge.
