On Saturday April 14, 8-9:30pm, VAE will host six hilarious female comedians in conjunction with the current exhibition, Feminine Spectrum, curated by Stacey Kirby. The goal is to showcase talented comedy performers while creating deeper experiences of our exhibitions, encouraging new community connections, and giving you a chance to laugh your head off for 90 minutes.

For April's show, comedy guru and host Adam Cohen is bringing a crew of five professional female comedians. Check out this line up of funny!

Tori Chaffee is originally from Burlington, VT. After deciding she couldn't take the harsh winters anymore and fleeing a hit-and-run accident, she moved to Chapel Hill and began doing comedy in January of 2016. She has been referred to, by herself, as the William Graham Bell of the Triangle comedy scene with the good looks and poise of a poor man’s or a homeless man’s January Jones. She has been seen on showcases in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Winston Salem and Willmington. You can catch her selling merch outside after the show. “Merch” is what the kids call drugs these days.

Mimi Benfield: Charlotte comedian Mimi Benfield is truly a "Gay of Sunshine." She's funny, candid & runs a Twitter page that's the perfect place to "accidentally" lose a couple of hours. In half a decade on stage she's conquered venues from Ontario to Hawaii and Beyond, embarked upon multiple comedy tours and participated in events alongside industry icons like Margaret Cho, Jen Kirkman, and Carlos Mencia. A woman of rare Vision, she's combined twin passions for humor and Tattoos in the groundbreaking "Laugh Ink."

Brett Williams is a zoologist and comedian and singer/songwriter who starred as Kate Monster in Avenue Q and is sure to make you laugh with her adorably dark humor. She has performed standup all over the southeast and has opened for Jon Reep and Mary Mack, among others. She recently won the One-Liner Tournament at the PIT in Chapel Hill.

Raleigh-based Shari Díaz was born and raised in the Bronx, NY, and is now the only Latina Comic in North Carolina. She is the founder of Boogie Down South Productions and a producer of Raleigh's Oak City Comedy Festival. She has opened for one of the original “Latin Kings of Comedy," Joey Medina, as well as BET Comic View comedians Kenny Williams, Anthony “AD” Demmer, and many others.

Gretchen McNeely is a seasoned performer with a background in sketch, improvisation, stand-up, voiceover, radio and humor writing. She's had the good fortune to open for Jen Kirkman, Maria Bamford, and Kurt Braunohler, among others. Gretchen is currently a comic, storyteller, event host, and corporate speaker. She has two young daughters, both already skilled in feigned innocence and misdirection.

Jody Oakley is a comedian based in Carrboro who appears regularly at many of the "Eyes Up Here Shows" in the Triangle and at the newly-opened PIT in Chapel Hill. Her comedy is drawn from real-life experiences as the mostly-proud owner of three dogs, as someone who dates sometimes, and as a woman, or whatever.

Host: Adam Cohen's life is a joke. He is a standup comedian who was runner-up in 2015's "North Carolina's Funniest Person" contest, and is also a visual artist, animator and director. He is co-founder of The Dangling Loafer comedy showcase in Raleigh. His other comedic dabblings have included syndication selection of his daily comic strip "Herschel" by Creators Syndicate; co-creation of "Major Flake," an animated pilot for Cartoon Network; and many years of award-winning work as an advertising creative director. He lives in Raleigh with his wife, two kids, cat, and an assortment of fascinating compulsions.

FEMININE SPECTRUM

VAE is excited to present FEMININE SPECTRUM, a project that includes the work of 16 artists and a suite of 9 programs created in collaboration with guest curator Stacey L. Kirby.

CURATORIAL STATEMENT
FEMININE SPECTRUM is the first curatorial project by artist Stacey L. Kirby that celebrates works by the creative community who identify as being on the feminine spectrum. Kirby takes a personal approach to the exhibition by selecting artists that have inspired her gender identity journey as a queer cis white female artist during her time in and outside of the South.

...teachers - artists - mentors - activists - educators - parents - musicians - siblings -partners - researchers - dancers - explorers…

Visitors are invited to reflect on connections between gender identity and creative expression as they experience painting, sculpture, performance, installation, works on paper, video, movement-based workshops with live music. Parenthood, familial roles, social justice, erotic love, questioning of personal and public histories and the evolution of gender identities are topics within FEMININE SPECTRUM. Kirby invites visitors to contemplate their own gender identity and influences as she acknowledges her limited representation of an ever-evolving spectrum.

THE CURATOR

Stacey L. Kirby is an artist from the American South currently based in Durham, NC. Kirby’s 'performative interactions' and collaborative projects combine installation and performance in both alternative, private and public spaces. Fueled by the current political climate and issues of citizenship, Kirby invites visitors to become active participants in her work to empower the voice within all of us.

Kirby is a recipient of the ArtPrize Eight Juried Grand Prize (2016), the NC Arts Council Artist Fellowship for Visual Artists (2014-15), an ArtPrize Pitch Night Grant (2016) for North Carolina and an Indies Arts Award from the Independent Weekly (Durham, NC) for her participation in the BAIN Project (2009). She is nominee for the Anonymous Was A Woman Award (2017) a finalist for the 1858 Prize by the Gibbes Museum of Art (Charleston, SC) for contemporary southern art. Kirby has also been awarded artist residencies throughout the U.S. including the Headlands Center for the Arts (Sausalito, CA), the Atlantic Center for the Arts (New Smyrna Beach, FL) and Artspace (Raleigh, NC). She is also a recipient of grants from the Durham Arts Council and the United Arts Council of Wake County.

Kirby's performances take place in various environments such as vacant historic buildings, protests, festivals as well as traditional art spaces. Kirby has performed and exhibited at ArtPrize Eight (Grand Rapids, MI), the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (Winston-Salem, NC), the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University (Durham, NC), Contemporary Art Museum (Raleigh, NC), North Carolina Museum of Art, the Mint Museum of Craft and Design (Charlotte, NC), Bard College, Flux Factory (Queens, NY), Fraction Workspace, (Chicago, IL), California State University in Fresno, Wellesley College (MA) and District Fine Arts, (Washington, DC). Her work is represented in the Duke University Rare Book Collection and other private collections. Kirby has a dual degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Studio Art and in Visual Communications in School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

CANstruction is a nonprofit organization that holds annual design/build competitions to construct giant sized structures made entirely out of canned food. The goal of CANstruction, in addition to providing thousands of pounds of food for hunger relief assistance, is to put a spotlight on the design and construction industry giving back to the communities they help to design and build. Architects, engineers, designers and/or contractors participate either by entering competing teams from their firms or by mentoring teams of students, local businesses, clubs or civic organizations. The theme for this year’s event is Save our Planet.

Summit Design and Engineering, a local architecture and engineering firm has teamed up with Monteith Construction and students from Wake Tech to build their entry Light Rail, using 3293 cans of food. The team will compete against other firms in the all-day event to help with hunger relief. Once the event is over the cans will go to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern Carolina. Come by and see how things turn out!

ARTIST STATEMENT

In my current practice I build large wall collages, called texture matrices, from paper, tape, and other leftover studio materials, then I make rubbings from the matrices as they evolve. The rubbings are made with wax pastel, watercolor crayon, and sometimes charcoal on paper or Yupo, and then some sections are worked in more detail with colored pencil and/or soft pastel. The completed rubbings are treated with an archival varnish.

Most of the pieces in this show were made from the Texture Matrix #3, identified as “TM3” in the titles. Four of these are collages created by combining two rubbings from adjacent areas on the matrix. The remaining pieces came from Texture Matrices #1 and #2 (TM1 & TM2) which were created during a residency at MassMOCA in August of 2017.

The process of creating the texture matrices and then making rubbings from them is like hiding a treasure and then rediscovering it. Even though I create the matrix, I can’t keep all the layers and their possible interactions in working memory, so every rubbing is a discovery of what’s there, what elements will come to the fore at each stage of the matrix’s evolution. Rubbings force me to work in the realm of the hidden, and to trust what will be revealed. I am intrigued by the play between what is hidden and what is revealed, and most particularly interested in what needs to remain hidden. Just as tree roots can only function properly if they stay hidden underground, much of what is important to our inner life must transpire underneath what is visible/conscious/apparent. Like X-rays, the rubbings reveal much of what is hidden beneath the layers of the texture matrix, but there is also a limit to what is revealed.

Artist Statement

Artists are part of every aspect of society, there is nothing created that does not include an artistic principle as much as it includes mathematical and physical science.
I have always merged science and art in my work. I live my life reflecting my ethical beliefs and artistic philosophy. My work embodies what I am: for good or bad, for perfect or flawed. The objects I create are imbued with my struggle to understand the unpredictability and the complexity of being human in the 21st century: as an older woman, as an American Latina, as a wife and mother, and as a believer in an ethical political/economic system for the world we live in.

This series of drawings/paintings embodies my research into the NeuroMorphic Universe that we all inhabit, playfully transcending the complexity of life.

Artist Bio

Natacha Sochat was born in Manhattan, New York City. As a very young child she grew up in Habana, Cuba. Her father was a Cuban revolutionary. In later childhood, her family lived in the south Bronx. Her love of art was nurtured while growing up in the rich cultural landscape of NYC. She attended the Bronx HS of Science. Natacha lived and worked in Europe in the early 1970’s, travelling to many different cities viewing many artistic works in person. She worked as a professional photographer in Berlin, Germany, including freelance work for "Berlin Today" magazine. After Berlin she moved to Boston MA in 1974, where she attended Boston University.  She is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Boston University (BA Biology with distinction, minor art history). Her post-baccalaureate studies at Brandeis University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston included painting, printmaking, photography, and video. She received her MFA in Studio Arts from Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her MFA thesis embodied the NeuroMorphic Universe - our connectedness biologically and otherwise, and her work still resides in this realm to this day. She received her MD degree from Boston University School of Medicine.


Natacha met Michael Sochat in 1975 while attending Boston University and they married in 1980. While at Boston University College of Liberal Arts, Natacha met Arthur Polonsky and Harold Tovish. Their philosophies greatly influenced her decision to be an artist. She learned how to code in 1975 before the personal PC was introduced. This was the stepping stone for Natacha to the world of computers that she would later naturally incorporate into her artistic process.


In 2010 Natacha co-founded NKG (Boston contemporary art gallery, now closed). NKG gave voice to the pluralism that continually enriches contemporary art and ideas. NKG's mission was to further contemporary art by giving equal value to the mind and the hand. Natacha curated many exhibitions and works during this time. She also created and managed the gallery’s website.

Natacha has taught at numerous places including School of the Museum of Fine Arts (painting), the New Hampshire Institute of Art (drawing/printmaking), and was Master Teacher in Studio Arts at the St. Paul's School Advanced Studies Program (Concord, NH). She is an interdisciplinary thinker, curator, and artist including painting, printmaking (etching, relief, monoprint, etc), bookmaking, small sculptural objects, performance, video, drawing, and photography. Her work is in numerous collections, has won many awards and has been in exhibitions throughout the United States. She was a member of the College Board Association and served on the Board of the Woman's Caucus for Art (NH), including President and webmaster.

In 2015 Natacha left NH and moved to Raleigh, NC where she currently resides and has a studio in ArtSpace.

VAE in partnership with our community venue, United Arts Council, is hosting a juried exhibition for the artist United project. Artist United is a group of multi-disciplinary artists dedicated to a life of cultural expression, insight, and social consciousness.

The Walls We Build is the inaugural theme for the artist UNITED to ask and explore “how people treat each other.” Walls, both physical and metaphorical, exist throughout the world. They have an application of separating people and places. As such, the question “how people treat each other” bares the deeper consideration of why humans desire to split and divide themselves. Highly political and personal in its foundation, UNITED states “Our strength as citizens and as artists arises from our ability to question and debate issues, contradictions and ironies that confront us.” Some things to consider include:

How does this feel?
What does this look like?
Can walls be positive?
Do they only bring antagonism?
What is an alternative to walls?

In this interpretation, UNITED asks other artists and creative groups of North Carolina to join and submit works to be displayed in the “Art Walk” events in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough in the month of June 2018. Examining walls within the limits and context of North Carolina. For example, the Women’s March in Raleigh or the law House Bill 2 (HB2). Other more broad examples for inspiration can be access to education, environmental justice, gentrification, forms/expressions of freedom, disability rights/access, and indigenous rights, and First Nations sovereignty. This call is open to two and three dimensional works.

Work must be original and completed in the last 3 years. No copies, mechanical reproductions, molds or kit work will be accepted. VAE reserves the right to exclude work due to size or special requirements. Entries must be hand delivered to the gallery or mailed in a returnable container. Artwork submitted on behalf of an artist requires written and signed authorization from the artist.

We will not exhibit or financially support work that co-opts the story of a community without representation from that community acting in a decision making role.

BIO

Robert Aiosa (b. 1982 Smithtown, NY) earned is his M.F.A from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and a B.F.A from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Aiosa’s art practice is rooted in the constantly changing urban landscape, and how the transitional state filled with uncertainty can affect our communities. He recently attended the Haystack School of Art and Crafts, Open Studio Residency in Deer Isle Maine. Aiosa recently participated a group show SKYWAY at the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida and Simulations, at Art, Literature + Lab, in Madison, Wisconsin. Aiosa is currently a faculty research associate/head of sculpture production at the University of South Florida’s Graphicstudio in Tampa Florida were he collaborates with leading contemporary artist to produce 3d editions and unique works.


Artist Research Statement

Neighborhood identities are evolving as buildings become renovated and repurposed for new activities and cater to an influx of different class demographics. My work is inspired by this transitional state of limbo filled with uncertainty, excitement, and trepidation. By abstracting the built environment and mixing vernacular, high style and urban planning, with historical and iconic forms, I aspire to showcase the diversity of class that make up our environments. I create these structures with off the shelf building materials such as Oriented Strand Board, Plywood, Pine 2x4s and in techniques that are common to the construction industry as a stand in for the common man, DIY aesthetic and pride in labor, all attributes found in our changing environments.

The South is a hub for creativity. Raleigh is doing its part to lead this charge: The City of Raleigh has adopted the Raleigh Arts Plan, a ten-year master plan to strengthen arts and culture for all. 

To do our part, VAE showcases some of the most ambitious and timely works by artists from across the region in our annual exhibition, Contemporary South. The purpose of the exhibition is to gather a survey of what artists in the Regional South are currently creating. Since 2012 this exhibition has grown and expanded to become one of VAE's most popular exhibitions.

“I eliminate all or most realistic imagery from my paintings. My goal is to give my viewers a pervasive sense of calm and to offer a moment of escape from our everyday “noise” when they engage with my work. I focus on the manipulation of many different media while immersed in the process of creating. Pieces are actively layered with media such as ink, watercolor and acrylic, and constructed over time through multiple working sessions. The inspiration for my imagery, and for this layering process, comes from the natural movement of liquids, rock formations and aerial views of land and water. I use minimal tools in the process of creating pieces often using my hands, fingers and even my breath to guide mediums around the working surface. Spontaneous and unplanned moments occur in every piece, which is exhilarating and challenging to me. 

After years of dormancy, I have finally revealed work that is authentic and genuine. As I moved into my professional teaching career (2003), the artist side of me started to dwindle. Educators strive every day to inspire our students to find their own personal voice in their artwork, but educator-artists often struggle with finding that very voice in our own work. I found myself at an aesthetic crossroads, feeling that I was supposed to make realistic art, as that was a great deal of what I was required to teach. I started many pieces that have never been finished and at times I was paralyzed by indecision and the pressure to be a realist. I placed a false reality on myself as a realistic artist. As a result, my authenticity and creativity suffered. However, over the past two years, I have revisited my original artistic influences like Georgia O’Keeffe, Wassily Kandinsky and Frank Stella, and have opened up again to the mindset I established over twenty years ago that successful art does not necessarily have to be realistic. The subject matter, style and media of my work are now my confident choices, not decisions that I feel were made for me. I get lost and feel freed in the process of creation and media manipulation.”

ARTIST STATEMENT: 

There are instances when the environment reminds us of our lives, such as the point at the beginning of a rainstorm when you’re not sure if you feel the water yet or not, in extreme weather when our lives are threatened, and also when we encounter something so breathtaking that for a brief moment our lives are taken off course. Art has been given the job of capturing contemporary life, providing mementos of things the culture does or should feel for. Culture moves at an exhausting pace yet it is difficult to make art about flux, to make objects and images that ask the audience to remain still in a culture which constantly threatens to pass them by. As we leave our bodies to move at the pace of progress, we pass the physical parts of life which remind us that we take up space. It is in the moments of the sublime experience that life slows down if even for a second. Art making provides me with an opportunity to explore the sublime through the construction of experiences. Art can mimic life physically; it can also mimic the experiences of life, adding interjections to remind us of the pace at which we live and how one perceives beauty and the aesthetic of contemporary life. 
 

Culture aims its efforts toward a sense of perfection. I see this in how we construct the landscape: by making it manicured we believe it is under control. The more we try to force our environment into submission, the more we are faced with the futility of imposing a system. My work is an attempt at beauty and perfection that understands the failure of that effort. I equate it to the way in which we start a process and once we are invested in it we find a problem. Instead of starting over and admitting the idea was unsuccessful, we put a patch over the issue. We start putting patches on patches and after a while the process is more about the attempts to repair than the original goal. In the end it might be the patches are more beautiful than the goal of the original plan.

I desire to artistically explore a sense of constructedness and impermanence, which remind me of our own impermanence despite the best efforts of science and medicine. While technology explains away things that were once mysteries, phenomena, or even miracles, the sight of such occurrences still inspire awe. The sublime comes from a need to be awed, a need to break routine, a need to feel there is still wonder in the world around us. As the natural environment shrinks, the sublime recedes into such miniscule events as the concentric rings formed from a drop of water, of the reflection of the sky in a puddle alongside the walkway.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I seek to eliminate all or most realistic imagery from my work. I acquit myself from making work that has been expected of me. Spontaneous and unplanned moments occur in every piece, which is exciting and challenging to me.

When I was a teenager, my attitude towards making art shifted dramatically as I let go of the notion that successful art had to be realistic. I was enamored by artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Wassily Kandinsky, Frank Stella and Jackson Pollock. Their work supported the ideas I had; to be focused on color, process, composition, etc. I knew that I could make tightly rendered, realistic work, but never felt comfortable with those creations representing me as an artist. I eventually listened to my instincts and started to strip away imagery, or at the very least abstract it. I allowed myself to focus on process, use of media and the basic components of art. I held onto this foundation through my college body of work, which allowed me to heavily investigate my viewpoint as an artist. I completed most of my work in clay and glass during this time (BFA, Alfred University 2002). As I moved into my professional teaching career, the artist I became started to dwindle. As educators, we strive every day to inspire our students to find their own personal voice in their artwork. As educator-artists, we often struggle with finding that very voice in our own work. I found myself back at the crossroads of feeling like I was supposed to make realistic art, as that was a great deal of what I was required to teach. Chaos has been defined as the first thing to exist.

New ideas emerge from it. Society moves forward because of it. Weather changes because of it. Art is created from it.

The world is full of chaos. Mental, physical, and environmental chaos comes at us at all times. But the world is also full of beauty. And sometimes this beauty is found in the chaos.

Even something as simple as a child’s Slinky toy can turn into chaos. Once tangled, it can never be returned to its original form. Why not take the misshapen, both in life and in objects, and make something out of it? You may be surprised by what results.

Pet the Zoo will be VAE’s new petting zoo opening in June of 2018. The zoo will be a place to be indoors with family and friends. A sanctuary for the animals created by artists to exist to be petted, fed, and cared for by the general public as they stay still in their hay-filled domain.

VAE asks artists to create animals for the viewing public to interact with. The animals that are created can be based on real animals or those thought up through imagination. If the animals are imagined we ask that the artist provides some info on the speices. The animals can be 2 or 3 dimensional, and the animal artworks must be interactive friendly.

• Entries must fit through VAE’s 104″ x 71″ door to be exhibited.

It is strongly preferred that video & audio artists submit their work online through clips or url addresses to online sharing formats like hulu, vimeo, youtube, or dropbox. ELIGIBILITY
Pet the Zoo is open to any living artist. A maximum of 2 works of any medium, per artist may be submitted. Two and three-dimensional entries will be accepted. Work must be original and completed in the last 3 years. No copies, mechanical reproductions, molds or kit work will be accepted. VAE reserves the right to exclude work due to size or special requirements. Entries must be hand delivered to the gallery or mailed in a returnable container. Artwork submitted on behalf of an artist requires written and signed authorization by the artist.

Shipments of artwork will be accepted January 25-27, 2017.

LIABILITY
All entries will be handled with the utmost care and respect. VAE is not liable for artwork during transportation to or from the gallery but does carry a blanket inland marine policy that covers most fine art works and craft items up to $5,000. THE LAB: CALL FOR ART 2017-18

What is THE LAB?

THE LAB is a space programmed by VAE Raleigh to experiment with different themes and challenges for our creative community. Produced as part of VAE Raleigh’s exhibitions program, THE LAB provides artists a chance to exhibit in a highly-visible space and challenges them to incorporate a theme that will connect a run of twelve exhibitions. The theme for this call is COMMUNITY! THE LAB exhibits will run for roughly 3 weeks, and will be on view for one First Friday reception.

What do we mean when we say COMMUNITY?
We think of community in a very open way! Community can be a group of people that that share common interests, share a history, share a characteristic - community means a common bond is shared.  This is an opportunity for you to work together, engage the public and have access to a great space to showcase your work. The golden rule—it must come from, engage, or interact with a community! We want you to work together with your community. 

Artists and curators are encouraged to submit exhibition proposals that consider community in a variety of ways, possibly including:
> A collaboration between artists from the community
> A curated exhibition of works that tell a story of community
> An interactive exhibition and invites the community to interact
> An exhibition that incorporates another artistic practices of the community: dance, spoken word, stand-up comedy, musical performance, theatre, etc!

Simple examples to get you going:
> An exhibition of work by multiple artists individual works organized around your community
> An exhibition of works that were created collaboratively from your community
> Curate a body of collection of works by artists whose work you think communicates well with one another and tells the story of a community
 

EXHIBITION STIPENDS - $250.
We are super excited to announce that Allen Tate Realtors is partnering with VAE to support THE LAB. This partnership allows VAE to offer a $250 exhibition stipend for each monthly exhibit.

THE PHYSICAL SPACE

Located in the storefront of our main gallery space at 309 West Martin Street, THE LAB offers artists the ability to make their exhibition the front face of VAE.

THE LAB features 2 large windows, 4 walls, 14' ceilings, and just over 550 sqft of floor space. The floor is concrete and cannot be drilled into. Electricity is available in the space. There is ample natural light and track lighting. Artwork that is light-sensitive may not be the best fit for THE LAB as there is no way to block out the sunlight completely, but we invite you to show us how it can be done in your project proposal!

1 - WALL: this wall separates THE LAB from VAE’s Main Gallery space. The wall is 19’10” wide and 12’9” tall.

2 - WALL: This wall is 11’2” wide and 9’ tall.

3 - SWINGING WALL: This wall is mounted on large, sturdy hinges that allow it to swing away from the wall, exposing the building's electrical panels. Artwork mounted on this wall should be done so in a way that makes it secure enough to move with the wall. Artwork placed in front of this wall should be easily moveable.

4 - WINDOW: The window is 10' wide and 12'6" tall to the ceiling. At the base of the window is a 17.5" section of brick and cannot be drilled into. Atop this section is a 6.5" wide wooden ledge. The two clear window panes are 86" tall with VAE's logo in the corner 60" from the bottom ledge. Above these two clear panes of glass (103.5" from the floor) is a 4" piece of wood, with the possibility of installing a hanging rod.

5 - PATH OF TRAVEL: This is an invisible line along the gallery floor between the left side of VAE's front door and 1- Wall. This is the designated path of travel for gallery visitors. The line spans 21'. The floor cannot be drilled into or altered in any permanent way.

6 - WINDOW: The window is 10' wide and 12'6" tall to the ceiling. At the base of the window is a 17.5" section of brick and cannot be drilled into. Atop this section is a 6.5" wide wooden ledge. The two clear window panes are 86" tall. Above these two clear panes of glass (103.5" from the floor) is a 4" piece of wood, with the possibility of installing a hanging rod.

7- WALL: This wall is 19'6” wide and 9’ tall.

THE CEILING: The ceiling is 12'6" tall and made of tin. Nothing can be drilled into or nailed to the ceiling. Objects less than 2lbs can hang from the ceiling using magnets.

SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSAL

ELIGIBILITY
THE LAB call-for-proposals is open to all artists, artist teams and curators. Proposals must show promise and good conceptual grounding that are collaborative in nature. Applicants do NOT need to be VAE members to apply, although at least one participating exhibitor/collaborator will have to be a member at the time of the exhibition. Read more about becoming a member of VAE! All media is encouraged. The cycle will run September 2017 - August 2018 (skipping December).

APPLICATION EVALUATION
Applications are evaluated by VAE staff and guest curators. Applicants will be notified via email by July 15th after the review of the status of their application.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Application materials include project statement, contact information for participating artists, resume(s), image inventory, 5-10 samples of your work, and $10 for members / $15 for non-members application fee. Detailed guidelines for applying are below. 

> Project Statements should be no longer than one page and should describe your proposed collaborative idea.

> Resumes should show prior exhibition history.

> Image Inventory should provide important details about the support materials submitted. Your inventory must contain the following information for each sample: the filename (“01_LASTNAME_TITLE.jpg”), title, medium, dimensions, retail price (if applicable) and year of completion. Upload your inventory as a .doc or .pdf.

> Application Fee must be processed in order for your application to be considered complete. You will be directed to the payment page after you have submitted your completed application.

> 5-10 samples* of your work**. All files should be named like so: 01_LASTNAME_TITLE.jpg, 02_LASTNAME_TITLE.jpg, 03_LASTNAME_TITLE.mov, etc.

**If the work you are proposing to exhibit in THE LAB is still currently in progress, no problem! You can submit .jpeg drawings of what you expect the work will be like, or you can rely solely on images of past work and your written narrative to describe the work you are proposing. It’s your call! THE LAB selection panel is interested in both the work you are applying to show and your past work.

THE FINE PRINT

EXHIBIT INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE
Artists are allotted 4 days to install their work. The installations must be fully complete by 2pm on the Thursday before the First Friday reception. Gallery staff is happy to support you during the installation of your exhibit, but the bulk of the responsibility of installing your work is on you. VAE provides wall vinyl signage for each show. Any maintenance required during the duration of the exhibit (other than turning the space on and off) is also up to you. If the exhibition requires regular interaction (like turning a piece on and off morning and night) from gallery staff it is up to the artist to make certain that the components can be operated while standing on the floor and that there are written directions for operating the pieces. At the end of the exhibition it is the artist’s responsibility to return the space to its original state by painting, spackling, sweeping (or whatever is needed). VAE is happy to provide spackle, sandpaper, brushes, rollers, drop cloths, etc., but if extensive repainting (or repairs) is required the artist may be asked to contribute money to purchase supplies, or to put down a refundable deposit prior to installing.

MONEY
The only fees associated with this exhibit are the initial application fees ($10 members / $15 non-members). VAE does extensive online marketing of its shows (including your own page on the VAE website), but does not print postcards. VAE cannot offer any financial support for projects in THE LAB.

SALES & COMMISSION
You do not have to offer salable work in THE LAB. Should you decide to, VAE earns 30% commission on the sales of members’ works, and 50% on sales of non-members’ works.

Serving Life: ReVisioning Justice

Serving Life: ReVisioning Justice 

January 5 - 25 

This exhibit follows the lives of 15 men on death row in North Carolina. Hidden Voices and VAE worked together to pair local artists with incarcerated participants. Artists created work that represents the personal narratives of the incarcerated individuals, shedding light on generational trauma, compounded layers of systemic oppression, and the social and systemic forces that result in a lifetime in prison, or death row. Serving Life creates pathways for empathy and compassionate action.

Hidden Voices is a radically inclusive, participatory, and co-creative collective committed to creating just, compassionate, and sustainable relationships. This network of relationships connects communities across difference and provides pathways for global change.

This event will be held from 2-6 pm on Monday, January 15. That time frame is just when the gurus are available to meet. You get to pick who you meet with and when (depending on availability). Pick and choose your TWO dates to suit your needs and schedule!

Alice has been the Manager of the Ackland Art Museum since its opening in 2011. She has even owned a few shops herself, including a bakery and a Japanese Paper boutique. She holds degrees in Fine Art and Interior Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and has over 20 years of Commercial Interior Design experience serving the Cambridge, MA and San Francisco, CA area.

DECO, Raleigh
Pam opened Deco Raleigh after serving almost 30 years as a non-profit executive. The store began as a mission focused on creating connections and supporting the community. Today, the store features almost 200 unique brands and, since 2012, has sold goods produced by more than 100 local makers and artisans. Deco has donated more than $40,000 in cash and goods to local charities and arts organizations.  

Krista Anne, The Mothership, Durham
Krista Anne was born and raised on a farm in North Carolina. In 2012, she founded The Makery, an online shop and showcase for North Carolina makers. In 2014, the store found a brick and mortar home. The Makery won The Smoffice Competition, two Indy Awards, and was featured on FastCoDesign and Southern Living online. In 2017 the shop merged with their neighbors to become The Mothership, a shop, coworking, and event space. Krista is also a programmer and works with startups, and is primarily interested in bringing femme values and heart into business and technology.

VAE is a hub for a diverse network of artists, a venue for artists to advance their careers, and a voice to influence positive change for the creative community. As a part of our hub, VAE hosts a number of artist groups with varying disciplines for artists to meet, discuss, and create art. VAE wants to showcase the diversity and multitude of works and creativity that our artist groups help to produce. 

VAE wants to showcase a range of textile works highlighting the diversity of process, materials, and presentation within this wide medium and industry. Honoring North Carolina’s rich history with textiles an focusing on works build on and expand its foundation. The intended impact of the exhibition is to expand our audience’s idea of what textiles can be.

ELIGIBILITY
THE TEXTILE SHOW is open to any living artist. A maximum of 2 works of any medium, per artist may be submitted. Two and three-dimensional entries will be accepted. Work must be original and completed in the last 3 years. No copies, mechanical reproductions, molds or kit work will be accepted. VAE reserves the right to exclude work due to size or special requirements. Entries must be hand delivered to the gallery or mailed in a returnable container. Artwork submitted on behalf of an artist requires written and signed authorization by the artist.

We will not exhibit or financially support work that co-opts the story of a community without representation from that community acting in a decision making role.

To use the online form to submit information about and images of your work, please review these instructions for naming your files:

• All files should be named like so: 01_LASTNAME_TITLE.jpg, 02_LASTNAME_TITLE.jpg.
• Still images should be sent as jpegs should be at least 1000px in their widest dimension, not to exceed 2MB per image. 2D artists may submit one JPEG per entry. 3D artists may submit two JPEGS (one full shot and one detail) per entry. Follow the filename format for works as indicated above.
• Video samples should be edited to no longer than 2-minute excerpts. It is strongly preferred that video & audio artists submit their work online through clips or url addresses to online sharing formats like hulu, vimeo, youtube, or dropbox. Videos submitted as uploaded files should be submitted as Quicktime files whose width is no larger than 720px and file size is no larger than 10MB (as that is the largest file eligible for upload on our entry software). Video pieces will only be accepted for exhibition if they are captioned, either with open captioning that is integrated into the video, or closed captioning that can be turned on when needed. Read info about captioning videos on Youtube, with iMovie, or Quicktime! Please only submit video art or video documentation of an art piece that requires video to be fully experienced. Do not send video walk-throughs of static exhibitions or video slideshows. While web-hosted submissions are strongly preferred, video and audio samples can be submitted on CD if necessary. Please contact Kyle Hazard to make arrangements for CD delivery prior to the deadline. Follow the filename format for works as indicated above.
• Audio: Audio should be submitted as separate MP3 files. Each track should be no longer than 2 minutes. Follow the filename format for works as indicated above.

Radical Gestures is a year-long exhibition endeavor to showcase works that feature performance and will take place throughout the city of Raleigh.

Performance here can be interpreted as any artform that takes the form of action, which encompasses not only theatrical spectacles or musical shows, but performance art and other ways of making meaning through our bodily behaviors or actions. Some questions and considerations related to performance can be: How does performance allow us to imagine alternative ways of being and relating to other? Does it have the potential to change the use, intention, or narrative of a space? Or what is it about performance that brings people together? Performance, unlike a traditional medium of painting or drawing, relates to and relies on space in unique ways. It can push the understanding of what or where an “art space” can be or who a “collaborator” can be.  What often draws artists to performance is its flexibility as a medium to create an environment that is incites laughter, teaches a lesson, tests our understandings of difference and humanity, and escapes reality. Thus as an umbrella category, we will accept any works dealing with the more formal aesthetics, such as theatre works, clown performance, musical presentations and sound, performance art, mixed-media works, and dance.

DETAILS
Radical Gestures is a juried exhibition, open to all artists. Artist/s will be responsible for bringing/installing/de-installing any props/sets/backgrounds/equipment at the set location of their performance.

Application must include documentation of either this submitted work or previous work if the proposed project has not been made yet and a written component in either the form of an artist statement or project proposal. Entries must received by 11:59pm on May 21st 2018.

They include images of public performances, live music, spoken word, participatory/group performance, dance, and theatre and puppetry. Please use these ideas as a starting point to inspire you and feel free to move past these categories or to find your ideas within one of these options!

JUROR
Jehan Roberson is a writer, educator, and artist using text as the basis for her interdisciplinary art practice. She recently earned her master's degree from NYU's John W. Draper School of Humanities and Social Thought. Currently, she is the Project Manager of the Hemispheric Institute of Politics and Performance Digital Video Library. Her creative and research interests include fiction, history, political and historical geographies, the archive, folklore and mythology. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in MadameNoire, VICE, emisférica, No Sugar No Cream, Kalyani Magazine, and Art-City, among others.

VAE is looking to showcase sculpture work, but you don't have to be a sculptor to make it. VAE challenges any and all artists and creatives to implement their process into 3D form ( that fits into a 12x12 box )
