VAE is a hub for a diverse network of artists, a venue for artists to advance their careers, and a voice to influence positive change for the creative community. As a part of our hub, VAE hosts a number of artist groups with varying disciplines for artists to meet, discuss, and create art. VAE wants to showcase the diversity and multitude of works and creativity that our artist groups help to produce.
En Masse will be a group exhibition of works created by VAE artist group members.

Artists must have attended one artist group meeting prior to entry
Artists may enter up to two works
No media restrictions.
Entries must fit through VAE’s 104″ x 71″ door to be exhibited.
Entries must be received by 4 pm on December 1, 2018

To use the online form to submit information about and images of your work, please review these instructions for naming your files:
All files should be named like so: 01_LASTNAME_TITLE.jpg, 02_LASTNAME_TITLE.jpg.
Still images should be sent as jpegs should be at least 1000px in their widest dimension, not to exceed 2MB per image. 2D artists may submit one JPEG per entry. 3D artists may submit two JPEGS (one full shot and one detail) per entry. Follow the filename format for works as indicated above.
Video samples should be edited to no longer than 2-minute excerpts. It is strongly preferred that video & audio artists submit their work online through clips or url addresses to online sharing formats like hulu, vimeo, youtube, or dropbox. Videos submitted as uploaded files should be submitted as Quicktime files whose width is no larger than 720px and file size is no larger than 10MB (as that is the largest file eligible for upload on our entry software). Video pieces will only be accepted for exhibition if they are captioned, either with open captioning that is integrated into the video, or closed captioning that can be turned on when needed. Read info about captioning videos on Youtube, with iMovie, or Quicktime! Please only submit video art or video documentation of an art piece that requires video to be fully experienced. Do not send video walk-throughs of static exhibitions or video slideshows. While web-hosted submissions are strongly preferred, video and audio samples can be submitted on CD if necessary. Ship artwork using sturdy, reusable packing materials clearly labeled with your name and telephone number. Do not include return postage in case the artwork sells during the run of the exhibition. Following the exhibition, each artist who shipped their work should generate a FedEx label and email it to Kyle so the piece may be returned. Do not use styrofoam packing peanuts. Shipments of artwork will be accepted January 25-27, 2017.

Esse Quam Videri (the North Carolina state motto, translating as “To be, rather than to seem”) is an exhibition exploring North Carolina, its history, culture, and landscape, through the lens of disability. There are many experiences which we all share: romantic and familial love, employment, citizenship, education, and caregiving, to name a few. People with disabilities have typically been erased or considered disqualified from these experiences, yet they too participate in them. Following the curatorial theme of the overarching EVERYDAY project, this exhibition will showcase works that tell stories unique to North Carolina, using universal experiences or ideas, but presented in audacious ways—particularly based in the audacious knowledge and creativity that disability brings to them. “To be, rather than to seem”: how can we explore through disability representation and disability aesthetics what disability history, knowledge, and culture is relative to North Carolina? This exhibition will serve as an introduction to the National Humanities Center’s fall cohort of fellows who are predominantly from outside the North Carolina and even the United States.
This call for art is open to any North Carolina-based artist, artist who is a North Carolina native, or artist who has created work about North Carolina. All works must be made from the a genuine perspective of life with a disability in North Carolina.
JURORS - Ann M. Fox & Linda Dougherty
Ann M. Fox, Professor of English at Davidson College
Professor of English at Davidson College, Dr. Ann Fox specializes in modern and contemporary dramatic literature and disability studies, regularly teaching classes about disability in drama, literature, and visual art. Her scholarship on disability and theater, and disability and visual culture has been published widely, and she has co-curated three disability-related visual arts exhibitions at Davidson College: RE/FORMATIONS: Disability, Women, and Sculpture; STARING(based on Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s book of the same name), and Re/Presenting HIV/AIDS. She is the 2017-18 Boswell Family Faculty Fellow at Davidson, and is currently working on a project on disability aesthetics in drama entitledAdaptive Activism: How Disability Refigures the Cultural Landscape.
Linda Dougherty, Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at NCMA
Linda Johnson Dougherty is the Chief Curator & Curator of Contemporary Art at the North
Carolina Museum of Art, where she oversees the contemporary art collection, organizes
exhibitions, and develops artists’ projects for the Museum Park. She co-directed the public art
program for the state of North Carolina for several years and prior to that she was a curator at
The Phillips Collection, a research associate at the National Gallery of Art, and a research
assistant at the National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC. As an independent
curator and critic based in Chapel Hill, she contributed reviews and articles on contemporary art
to numerous national art publications, and has also written exhibition catalogues and guest
curated exhibitions for museums and contemporary art centers in North Carolina and throughout
the United States. She has a BA in Art History from Wesleyan University and an MA in Art
History from Williams College.

JUROR - Sam West, Curator at Attenborough Arts Centre
Sam West has more than eight years of curatorial experience, working for several prominent organizations in the UK such as Nottingham Contemporary, The National Centre for Craft and Design, and recently as curator for Attenborough Arts Centre in Leicester. He has also devised several independent projects in partnership with Nottinghamshire based curatorial office Ordinary Culture, including the acclaimed site-specific Duke’s Wood Project – an exhibition in a former oil field.
Attenborough Arts Centre, with its inclusive remit and support for the disability arts sector, has presented Sam West, who identifies as a disabled person, with a platform to develop expertise and knowledge of disability politics and its relationship to art practice. In particular, he is interested in the performance of identity across a range of contexts, for example, popular culture. This interest spans visual art, theatre, performance art, and the overlap between the three. He is also interested in the documentation and portrayal of performance in film, artist moving-image, photography, and digital media.

Aloft Raleigh Call for Art
ONGOING COMMUNITY EXHIBIT OPPORTUNITY!
Aloft Raleigh offers exhibitions that are seen by thousands of people each month: guests of the hotel, visitors to the ground-floor businesses, attendees of conferences or meetings, and people headed to the hotel's restaurant and bar. The hotel's branding is contemporary, colorful, and visually stimulating and it is in their mission to support local artists who make work with that same look and feel.

Aloft Raleigh offers exhibitions that are seen by thousands of people each month: guests of the hotel, visitors to the ground-floor businesses, attendees of conferences or meetings, and people headed to the hotel's restaurant and bar. The hotel's branding is contemporary, colorful, and visually stimulating and it is in their mission to support local artists who make work with that same look and feel.
Artists are curated by the Aloft Raleigh staff and while the venue does not offer a public reception artists are financially compensated $125 per month.

Located just of Atlantic and Whitaker Mill road Dock 1053 is a hub for office, retail, food n' bev', and artists such as our amazing friends at Glas, a neon studio. Dock 1053's gallery is located in the in-house courtyard right between the Loading Dock co-working space and the studios of Glas.

ULTRALIGHT 2 is an exhibition of artwork about disability, created by artists living with disabilities. VAE is offering a platform for artists who identify as living with disabilities to take back the narrative that is so often controlled by the medical field, media, and stereotypes. ULTRALIGHT 2 seeks to exhibit work that challenges the viewing public to leave their preconceived notions and sympathy at the door, and experience artwork that tells the real story of living disabilities and the current state of access. The exhibition breaks access into three parts: physical, communication, and attitude. We encourage artists to draw inspiration from these questions:
- What physically creates a barrier to access?
- How does communication prevent access?
- How do attitudes surrounding disability prevent access?
- What does celebrating life living with disabilities look like to you?
- What do you wish more people knew about living with disabilities?
This exhibition is meant to empower people with disabilities who often feel left out of the contemporary art world. VAE is working to be a creative space where everyone feels welcome. Mixed Media + Textile Artist Critique with Oami Powers
VAE's next Artist Critique will be with guest critic, Oami Powers. This event is for open to textile and mixed media artists. Space is limited.
VAE invites area educators and art professionals to do short individual critiques of your work.
The next critique is with guest critic, Oami Powers on Tuesday February 20th from 7-8:30pm at VAE Raleigh.
Oami Powers is a designer and artist raised in California & New Zealand who now calls Raleigh, NC home. Her clothing designs have been sold in boutiques across the country and been featured in InStyle, Southern Living, the News & Observer and the IndyWeek. She now creates art in a variety of media and works with the design innovators and creative troublemakers over at Designbox.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Windswept mountain ridges. Quiet forest trails. Cliffs overlooking an expansive sea. Big skies
and dramatic vistas. I’m drawn to nature.
Inspiration comes from local venues, as well as, far-flung destinations like Iceland and
Tasmania. While hiking, I fill sketchbooks with pen and watercolor drawings, translating those
images into larger oil paintings in my studio. I think of myself as a plein air artist who also paints
indoors.
My recent landscapes range from impressions to abstraction. They are created with oil and cold
wax - applied, layered, scraped, and marked - creating textured and complex expressions of
nature.

business world and as a community volunteer, she has been a professional artist for 4 years.
Chris has exhibited in Cary and Raleigh and her paintings are in private collections coast to

ARTIST STATEMENT
I have spent my life studying, teaching, and making art. What inspires me to pick up a pencil, brush, or pen, and make marks on paper or canvas is the same now as it was when I first started out as an artist: color, pattern, and flattened space.
For me, color needs to be as intense and bright as I can make it. I want my colors to be exciting, like opening a new box of crayons on the first day of school.
My work is flat and decorative. I am mad for pattern, texture, and interesting marks. I like the movement they create in a drawing or painting and the way they activate the surface by breaking large shapes into smaller colored spots.
Although I draw from life, I make a conscious effort to flatten the space in the picture plane by tilting it toward the viewer and altering the perspective. The objects looked stacked, one on top of the other, vertically, rather than one behind the other, horizontally.
There is also an element of "storytelling" in my work. The objects I draw and paint are objects I touch or use every day--objects perhaps unimportant to others, but which have meaning for me beyond my finding them interesting or beautiful. These objects evoke stories from my own memories or sometimes stories I make up about them.
I find these stories funny or whimsical, sometimes sad, sometimes silly. We all struggle, I think, daily, with horrors in the news and difficulties in our own lives. In my drawings, there is no cruelty or violence, no war or hunger or pain. I am aware that this is not the real world, but I want the viewer to forget all that if only for a moment. I want my work to be a feast for the eyes.
BIO
Saundra Smith Rubiera is a North Carolina artist who works in colored pencils, markers, acrylic paints, and linocuts. She has an MFA degree from East Carolina University with a major in painting and a minor in printmaking. She is a retired art teacher and has illustrated three published books. Saundra’s work has been exhibited in national, regional, and local shows. Her business, Dancing Lady Designs, creates custom art and furniture for children’s rooms.
Saundra was a 2017 recipient of an Individual Artist Grant. The grant funded the framing of this travelling show which has been shown in six locations throughout the state. The Regional Artist Project Support program is administered and funded by the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County with support from the NC Arts Council and the counties of Lee, Moore, Richmond, Robertson, and Scotland, the City of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, and private contributions.

ARTIST BIO
Jarrett Burch is a self-taught artist originally from the foothills of north Georgia who began painting around 2002. His inspirations include Mark Rothko, Norman Lewis, and Joan Mitchell. Jarrett’s paintings have been purchased by clients throughout the Triangle; Philadelphia; New York City; Los Angeles- and Calgary, Alberta.
Jarrett is affiliated with Raleigh’s Visual Art Exchange and the Durham Art Guild, and is in the artist registry of The Painting Center in New York City. His work has been juried by many distinguished judges, including Anne Strauss (Assistant Curator, Metropolitan Museum of Art NYC); Peter Nisbet (Chief Curator, Ackland Art Museum); Katherine Adkins (Assistant Curator, Nasher Museum of Art); and Vanessa des Claux (Tate Modern UK).

A Solabile is a solar-powered mobile ala Calder. Like mobiles, they move, but not only in air currents, also when the sun shines. The work honors the sculptor George Rickey, and Walter De Maria’s “Lightning Field” landscape art.
The different models work under different light conditions. All current models are indoor models. Some models can stand direct sunlight. Other models work under bright office lights or indirect sunlight in a bright room, but shouldn't be in direct sun. More information forthcoming as more models are introduced.
I make Solabiles in my basement. They are handmade from electronic parts, mostly from Digikey and Jameco. I use Fritzing to design and Fab my circuit boards. I think they are the smallest circuit boards every fabbed by the Fritzing Fab, only a few square centimeters.
Soon I will also publish a history of solar-powered mobiles as I understand it.

Artist Statement
Can we understand anything absolutely and completely? Even if we study and measure every quality we see, there are important characteristics that are beyond our ability to measure. Measuring and organizing helps everyone to better understand how the world works. But the full picture is still always slightly, we hope only slightly, beyond full comprehension.
My work is compositionally inspired by the visual language of graphs, charts, and writing. When I plan and lay out my work, I incorporate grids, consider margins, and arrange symbols to create a space where the placement of something has meaning and is in part defined by our experiences with other visual forms of communications. Grid lines could divide individuals or highlight their commonalities, and a line graph could represent changes between two points but could also be a horizon line. As I collect data for each piece, I determine a layer by layer procedure to incorporate each piece of information into the same space.
I choose many of my materials for the textures they allow me to create. My aim is to elicit an impression about the environment of the artwork; similar to the way walking in the sand or stepping on broken glass might also conjure an impression. Incorporating found objects and unconventional art-making materials allows the nature of the materials to represent for me unclear characteristics that cannot be defined or quantified. Spread over the entire surface, these non-quantifiables are present everywhere.
As a constant observer, I always feel that if I continue to look at a problem I may find a new perspective from which to see it. Through my art-making process, I might determine where I exist within the composition. And maybe you can see yourself somewhere in the grid also.
Biography
Brian Imfeld was born in 1978 in Beaufort, South Carolina. As the son of military parents he studied and learned in many towns and cities in the eastern United States. In 2001, Brian earned his BFA in Printmaking and BS in Art from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. His work has been included in exhibitions in Ohio and North Carolina. He recently exhibited a piece in the 2017 North Carolina Artist Exhibit at the Duke Energy Center in Raleigh, NC. Brian currently lives and works as an Art teacher in Raleigh, NC.

BIO
Jane Cheek is a mixed media artist who works in an abstract expressionist style. She enjoys working with bright colors, metallic accents, and texture to create art that plays with whimsy and elegance. Jane is interested in using the balance of artistic opposites to represent the balance of emotions she has as a survivor of child abuse with a happy life as an adult. She finds joy and inspiration in nature, her three exuberant children, her amazing husband, and the wonderfully supportive and loving people in her life. When you look at Jane's work you might notice the unmixed colors of Fauvists like van Gogh paired with the simplistic playful shapes of expressionists such as Miró and Kandinsky. In her works with craft and sculptural elements, you may see influences of Janet Echleman and Juame Plensa. Jane's work is a daily practice of seeking and creating joy.
Jane attended North Carolina State University where she received a BA in Visual Arts Applications. After graduating, Jane taught art for five years at a K-8 charter school in Durham while working in her home studio and began selling work at local art fairs. She took a few years off while her children were newborns and then resumed work in her home studio. Jane’s work is currently on display at Read With Me, Emily & Co, and Lavish. When she isn't working on art, she and her family can be found living the unschooling life at local parks, and museums, and traveling as often as possible.
ARTIST STATEMENT
In this collection I am exploring contradictory artistic elements. I am working with the relationships between opacity and translucency; two dimensions and three; structure and complete abstraction; whimsy and elegance. I have used these elements to explore the contradictions between my own past as an abused child and my present as a happy mother, wife, and artist. I used bright colors and metallic accents to create happy expressionist work because I have chosen to seek and create joy in my life.
