Pet the Zoo is VAE’s petting zoo!. The zoo will be a place to be indoors with family and friends for the month of June. A sanctuary for the animals created by artists to exist to be petted, fed, and cared for by the general public as they stay still in their hay-filled domain.

Pet the Zoo is VAE’s new petting zoo opening in June of 2018. The zoo is a place to be indoors with family and friends. A sanctuary for the animals created by artists to exist to be petted, fed, and cared for by the general public as they stay still in their hay-filled domain.
VAE asked artists to create animals for the viewing public to interact with. Some works are based on real animals, others come straight from the jungle-minds of the artists! This fun, quirky exhibit is part of VAE's efforts to encourage artists to step outside their comfort zones, try new media, and take chances!

ARTIST STATEMENT
Windswept mountain ridges. Quiet forest trails. Cliffs overlooking an expansive sea. Big skies
and dramatic vistas. I’m drawn to nature.
Inspiration comes from local venues, as well as, far-flung destinations like Iceland and
Tasmania. While hiking, I fill sketchbooks with pen and watercolor drawings, translating those
images into larger oil paintings in my studio. I think of myself as a plein air artist who also paints
indoors.
My recent landscapes range from impressions to abstraction. They are created with oil and cold
wax - applied, layered, scraped, and marked - creating textured and complex expressions of
nature.

Chris Young is an Iowa native and a 21 year Cary, NC resident. While also active in the
business world and as a community volunteer, she has been a professional artist for 4 years.
Chris has exhibited in Cary and Raleigh and her paintings are in private collections coast to
coast.

What if you got to design your own perfect city totally from scratch? What would it look like?
In My Backyard (IMBY) is a month-long collaborative experiment where we come together and try to do just that, right here in VAE’s main gallery. VAE will create a blank topographic slate for the public to build on and offer prompts for things to include (like roads, power, food, culture, accessibility, etc.).
Participants will be able to come in a build, renovate, tear down, relocate buildings, green spaces, or whole parts of the city to help determine what an open source city building looks like. VAE is providing the supplies and space for the community at large to come an determine what the community should look like all we need is public’s help.
VAE is also planning days for groups to come in and work on the city. Groups can build on their own, work as a team, respond to a randomly drawn disaster or they can work through a building project game. The game pits roles and power structures against one another to see whose project comes out on top?
IMBY is part interactive art installation, part game, and part community conversation. People of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to come help build paradise.

Project Statement
For the past months I immersed myself in stories of Muslim women, learning what inspires us to resist and to exist in these times of national chaos, global catastrophes, and day to day struggles. My resistance purses are portraits of contemporary human struggles and triumphs. They are empowering, bold, and collaborative, fueled by our collective passions; they serve as a documentation of an era in which voices are silenced, yet, remaining silent is not an option. This is an ongoing project that seeks to re-contextualize how we view protest, and allows insight into the hearts and minds of a diverse community of women. And I couldn't have thought of a better partner than photographer-friend Caroline Cockrell to join me on this journey called The Protest Purse.

This project will take place in August and September of 2018. The project is led by an international steering committee of people and artists with disabilities and people with careers at the intersection of arts and disability. The steering committee was strategically built to give this project the national reach and perspective needed to produce an event that is unique to our community. The project will be centered around a visual art exhibition, which will be mounted in VAE’s main gallery and curated by Sam West, head curator at Attenborough Arts Centre. The project will also include a keynote address, panel discussions, interactive activities, and theatrical, musical, and dance performances.

THE EVERYDAY's central exhibition in VAE's Main Gallery is an exhibition exploring universal themes experiences which we all share: romantic and familial love, employment, citizenship, education, and caregiving, to name a few. People with disabilities have typically been erased or considered disqualified from these experiences, yet they too participate in them. Following the curatorial theme of the overarching EVERYDAY project, this exhibition will showcase works that tell stories, using universal experiences or ideas, but presented in audacious ways.
All works must be made from the genuine perspective of life with a disability.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Absurdism describes how we, as humans, desire order, purpose and meaning in life. As a result, we are left unsatisfied by the “silence of the universe” and its unwillingness to unquestionably provide us with such. With no life meaning, there is no point to live. Yet, suicide is also meaningless. This brings us to a position of existence where we are left living our lives with no meaning. The acceptance of this meaningless state of being alive supposedly leaves us existing in total freedom. Through my work, I examine the conflict of the individual’s role and search for the state of freedom in which Absurdism leaves us. (Absurdism)
In our social positions, phantom communities, social constructs, expectations and indoctrinations put us on the stage to play a perceived intended role. In the lifelong universal pursuit of meaning and happiness we find ourselves together on a stage in which we must ask ourselves if we can find truth in the role in which we are playing. By observing and investigating common social scenarios, my artworks induce conversations about social conditions drawing attention to the need for change or at least acknowledgment of the effects of such conditions on and within the individual.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Objecthood plays a vital role in the works I create. My work measures relationships between ideas and environs. The role of the individual object is always put into question through the creative juxtaposition of materials in which objects combine to create new functions. I combine the use of readymade objects with unconventional materials to create an environment that promotes conversation. Recognizable objects create a familiarity concept with the viewer that entices them to further inspect the work.
Through the use of everyday objects and easily recognizable materials, viewers are invited to consider each work, its components and the meaning given to the piece by the intentional combination of these objects and their new functions. By shedding light on the absurdity of imposed social roles, viewers are prompted to ask themselves whether the role they play in life is merely a façade – an act – or if there is some truth in who they are and the potential of who they can become.
ARTIST BIO
Amy M. Anderson is a visual artist who specializes in conceptual sculpture and installation. Amy is a graduate of UNC-Wilmington, obtaining her BA in Philosophy and Religion, as well as Studio Art in 2004, and her Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in 2017 (Thesis: Feeling and Filling Space: A Finnish Art Experience and Gas Station Discos). She has her Master of Fine Arts from Western Carolina University (Thesis: My Titles are Always in Pencil: Projects in The Absurd), and has worked at international artist residencies in Spain and Finland. Amy is currently pursuing her PhD in Transformative Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies, is an instructor at Randolph Community College and faculty in the Graduate Liberal Studies program at UNC-Wilmington.

FEMININE SPECTRUM is the first curatorial project by artist Stacey L. Kirby that celebrates works by the creative community who identify as being on the feminine spectrum. Kirby takes a personal approach to the exhibition by selecting artists that have inspired her gender identity journey as a queer cis white female artist during her time in and outside of the South.

Visitors are invited to reflect on connections between gender identity and creative expression as they experience painting, sculpture, performance, installation, works on paper, video, movement-based workshops with live music. Parenthood, familial roles, social justice, erotic love, questioning of personal and public histories and the evolution of gender identities are topics within FEMININE SPECTRUM. Kirby invites visitors to contemplate their own gender identity and influences as she acknowledges her limited representation of an ever-evolving spectrum.

THE CURATOR
Stacey L. Kirby is an artist from the American South currently based in Durham, NC. Kirby’s 'performative interactions' and collaborative projects combine installation and performance in both alternative, private and public spaces. Fueled by the current political climate and issues of citizenship, Kirby invites visitors to become active participants in her work to empower the voice within all of us.
Kirby is a recipient of the ArtPrize Eight Juried Grand Prize (2016), the NC Arts Council Artist Fellowship for Visual Artists (2014-15), an ArtPrize Pitch Night Grant (2016) for North Carolina and an Indies Arts Award from the Independent Weekly (Durham, NC) for her participation in the BAIN Project (2009). She is nominee for the Anonymous Was A Woman Award (2017) a finalist for the 1858 Prize by the Gibbes Museum of Art (Charleston, SC) for contemporary southern art. Kirby has also been awarded artist residencies throughout the U.S. including the Headlands Center for the Arts (Sausalito, CA), the Atlantic Center for the Arts (New Smyrna Beach, FL) and Artspace (Raleigh, NC). She is also a recipient of grants from the Durham Arts Council and the United Arts Council of Wake County.
Kirby's performances take place in various environments such as vacant historic buildings, protests, festivals as well as traditional art spaces. Kirby has performed and exhibited at ArtPrize Eight (Grand Rapids, MI), the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (Winston-Salem, NC), the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University (Durham, NC), Contemporary Art Museum (Raleigh, NC), North Carolina Museum of Art, the Mint Museum of Craft and Design (Charlotte, NC), Bard College, Flux Factory (Queens, NY), Fraction Workspace, (Chicago, IL), California State University in Fresno, Wellesley College (MA) and District Fine Arts, (Washington, DC). Her work is represented in the Duke University Rare Book Collection and other private collections. Kirby has a dual degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Studio Art and in Visual Communications in School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

First Friday Reception & CANstruction scavenger hunt: Friday, April 6th, 6-9pm
CANstruction is a nonprofit organization that holds annual design/build competitions to construct giant sized structures made entirely out of canned food. The goal of CANstruction, in addition to providing thousands of pounds of food for hunger relief assistance, is to put a spotlight on the design and construction industry giving back to the communities they help to design and build. Architects, engineers, designers and/or contractors participate either by entering competing teams from their firms or by mentoring teams of students, local businesses, clubs or civic organizations. The theme for this year’s event is Save our Planet.
Summit Design and Engineering, a local architecture and engineering firm has teamed up with Monteith Construction and students from Wake Tech to build their entry Light Rail, using 3293 cans of food. The team will compete against other firms in the all-day event to help with hunger relief. Once the event is over the cans will go to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern Carolina. Come by and see how things turn out!

BIO
Robert Aiosa (b. 1982 Smithtown, NY) earned is his M.F.A from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and a B.F.A from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Aiosa’s art practice is rooted in the constantly changing urban landscape, and how the transitional state filled with uncertainty can affect our communities. He recently attended the Haystack School of Art and Crafts, Open Studio Residency in Deer Isle Maine. Aiosa recently participated a group show SKYWAY at the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida and Simulations, at Art, Literature + Lab, in Madison, Wisconsin. Aiosa is currently a faculty research associate/head of sculpture production at the University of South Florida’s Graphicstudio in Tampa Florida were he collaborates with leading contemporary artist to produce 3d editions and unique works.
Artist Research Statement
Neighborhood identities are evolving as buildings become renovated and repurposed for new activities and cater to an influx of different class demographics. My work is inspired by this transitional state of limbo filled with uncertainty, excitement, and trepidation. By abstracting the built environment and mixing vernacular, high style and urban planning, with historical and iconic forms, I aspire to showcase the diversity of class that make up our environments. I create these structures with off the shelf building materials such as Oriented Strand Board, Plywood, Pine 2x4s and in techniques that are common to the construction industry as a stand in for the common man, DIY aesthetic and pride in labor, all attributes found in our changing environments.

“I eliminate all or most realistic imagery from my paintings. My goal is to give my viewers a pervasive sense of calm and to offer a moment of escape from our everyday “noise” when they engage with my work. I focus on the manipulation of many different media while immersed in the process of creating. Pieces are actively layered with media such as ink, watercolor and acrylic, and constructed over time through multiple working sessions. The inspiration for my imagery, and for this layering process, comes from the natural movement of liquids, rock formations and aerial views of land and water. I use minimal tools in the process of creating pieces often using my hands, fingers and even my breath to guide mediums around the working surface. Spontaneous and unplanned moments occur in every piece, which is exhilarating and challenging to me.
After years of dormancy, I have finally revealed work that is authentic and genuine. As I moved into my professional teaching career (2003), the artist side of me started to dwindle. Educators strive every day to inspire our students to find their own personal voice in their artwork, but educator-artists often struggle with finding that very voice in our own work. I found myself at an aesthetic crossroads, feeling that I was supposed to make realistic art, as that was a great deal of what I was required to teach. I started many pieces that have never been finished and at times I was paralyzed by indecision and the pressure to be a realist. I placed a false reality on myself as a realistic artist. As a result, my authenticity and creativity suffered. However, over the past two years, I have revisited my original artistic influences like Georgia O’Keeffe, Wassily Kandinsky and Frank Stella, and have opened up again to the mindset I established over twenty years ago that successful art does not necessarily have to be realistic. The subject matter, style and media of my work are now my confident choices, not decisions that I feel were made for me. I get lost and feel freed in the process of creation and media manipulation.”

This exhibit follows the lives of 15 men on death row in North Carolina. Hidden Voices and VAE worked together to pair local artists with incarcerated participants. Artists created work that represents the personal narratives of the incarcerated individuals, shedding light on generational trauma, compounded layers of systemic oppression, and the social and systemic forces that result in a lifetime in prison, or death row. Serving Life creates pathways for empathy and compassionate action.

BIO
Jane Cheek is a mixed media artist who works in an abstract expressionist style. She enjoys working with bright colors, metallic accents, and texture to create art that plays with whimsy and elegance. Jane is interested in using the balance of artistic opposites to represent the balance of emotions she has as a survivor of child abuse with a happy life as an adult. She finds joy and inspiration in nature, her three exuberant children, her amazing husband, and the wonderfully supportive and loving people in her life. When you look at Jane's work you might notice the unmixed colors of Fauvists like van Gogh paired with the simplistic playful shapes of expressionists such as Miró and Kandinsky. In her works with craft and sculptural elements, you may see influences of Janet Echleman and Juame Plensa. Jane's work is a daily practice of seeking and creating joy.
Jane attended North Carolina State University where she received a BA in Visual Arts Applications. After graduating, Jane taught art for five years at a K-8 charter school in Durham while working in her home studio and began selling work at local art fairs. She took a few years off while her children were newborns and then resumed work in her home studio. Jane’s work is currently on display at Read With Me, Emily & Co, and Lavish. When she isn't working on art, she and her family can be found living the unschooling life at local parks, and museums, and traveling as often as possible.
ARTIST STATEMENT
In this collection I am exploring contradictory artistic elements. I am working with the relationships between opacity and translucency; two dimensions and three; structure and complete abstraction; whimsy and elegance. I have used these elements to explore the contradictions between my own past as an abused child and my present as a happy mother, wife, and artist. I used bright colors and metallic accents to create happy expressionist work because I have chosen to seek and create joy in my life.

ARTIST BIO
Cathy is not, nor does she proclaim to be, a music connoisseur but what she will say is she appreciates a good groove and if it offers up a funky bass-line, then all the better. It is that very groove that guides her along in the process by which she creates her Art.
At the base of each piece of Art is her photography. The majority of Cathy’s work stems from photographs she has captured at live music events. And on occasion she has been so moved and inspired that she captures a screenshot from her television and proceeds to turn that into a piece of Art.
In 2011, Reflections by Cathy Foreman was created and she hasn’t looked back. Currently a resident of Raleigh, NC, by way of Tillery, NC, Cathy has carved out her own space in which she comfortably sits – but it didn’t happen overnight. In what she says seems like a long and arduous road, she started simply by shooting small get-togethers with her girlfriends and high school classmates. After that, she started going on “shoot-abouts” and capturing the people and things in her surroundings. In 2012, a connection to a local non-profit focused her talents as she slowly integrated texture into her work. She was cautious as she was unsure how it would be accepted, but in 2014, she realized she has always beat to a different drum, and firmly planted her feet in what she now calls “Photography to Art”.
Through music, Cathy has found that the animation of Artists, affords her a unique opportunity to interpret their performance and energy, it has helped to mold her creative style. Once she narrowed the area of which she wanted to concentrate, she delved further into the manipulation of the photograph thus creating these photographic works of art.
Today, Cathy primarily photographs live music events, but she continues to hone her craft by staying true to her grassroots and doing shoot-abouts in whichever city or town she happens to be. Her heart lies with creating Art and it is those artistic pieces you will often see.

An exhibition of photo-based object works where each piece requires a physical action from the viewer to be fully experienced. This art is made to be touched. The exhibition features the one-of-a-kind assemblage and installation pieces by Addison Brown, Brooke Caudle, Heidi Kirkpatrick, Tobia Makover, and Lori Vrba.
