During the Privilege Coffee shop at VAE, patrons can trade their privilege (white, male, heterosexual, 12 categories in total) for coffee. The more privilege a patron has, the more coffee they receive.
The project is inspired by conversations started by movements such as Black Lives Matter, and is also a response to the negative rhetoric of the Trump administration. The coffee shop serves as a venue for dialogue around difficult topics and self reflection.
Privilege Coffee is an on-going year long performance which has taken place in various locations, such as Greensboro, North Carolina, as well as the Art in Odd Places Festival in Orlando, Florida.
